Ive been running a lot lately, like I was before I left Charleston, and I'm finally starting to regain my stride. Now- that's not to say I can touch the sub 12 minute two mile treks I used to, but hopefully within the next 8 weeks I will. I wish I had brought better earphones, my studio quality, jumbo sized Sony DJ monitoring earmuffs are too bulky to do much more than walk in, and I don't want to spend any coin on new ear-buds, but, if it will help me run more, which it will, I believe it to be a sound investment, as your health is the only true thing of worth you can control in this world. That should really be multiple sentences, but I LOVE ,'s. So I'm on a quest to find some ear-buds or runners headphones for under 10E. So far no luck.
But I want to elaborate on what I previously stated "your health is.." because that truth, that I hold unalienable, is not as important to some other inhabitants of our amazing planet. And, well, it should be. It amazes me how people can find animals and things like automobiles, music, paintings, and other man made objects to be so interesting(and given, all of these things are genuinely amazing, but for the sake of the argument, pay that no mind) but NOT consider the human body/ mind to be on a totally different level.
Lets use an example, I'll construct a brief narrative, for our younger readers.
Jimmy and Timmy go to the Zoo. They see Lions, Tigers, and Bears (Oh My!). They boys look at the beautiful, majestic Lion and his flowing, ethereal mane, and Jimmy looks to Timmy and voices his opinion. "Woah! Lions are incredible!", Timmy nods in agreement, and then the two retire to the picnic tables to enjoy their PB&J's.
Now, it is very true that Lions, and all other creatures are in their own way, "incredible". But, what is even more impressive? Their observer. If you stumble upon a Lion in the Jungle and say "Woah! That is the most beautiful thing I've ever laid my eyes upon!", do you not wonder what the Lion is thinking? Because if I was a Lion, and I witnessed this scene from my Lion eyes, I would think "Holy Shit! Did that thing just TALK?, because I can't do that!" Now, thats taking a lot for granted, as far as Lions speaking English, Lions understanding the concept of speech, and so on and so forth. I'm no Zoologist, but I hope you understand the point. There are no, NO, animals on this Earth that come close to being as advanced as humans. Thats why WE admire THEM as being natural and beautiful, and not vice-versa.
Lets press on.
Jimmy and Timmy are in the Zoo, ten years after their first visit. They arrive at the Lions Den with high hopes of again observing the beautiful animal that seemed to by shaped by the Hands of God himself. They arrive and see an overweight, lethargic, and thus ill tempered creature, parading around in what vaguely resembles the skin of the once awe demanding beast.
Now, we, (not "You" because I'm not that much of a prick) have to make a choice. Is the future of human kind going to be like the sad (yet very very underdeveloped) story of the Lion? Will Man continue to ignore his primal instincts, replacing them with PBR, NASCAR, and MTV? Or will the masses that inhabit this enormous Lions Den , this Eden of the solar system, decided to put down their Camel Lights and return to breathing in O2, the gift we recieve from our not so distant relatives (on a long enough timeline) that sink their roots deep into the red-brown soil of our Mother Earth?
Now, I'm not pushing some social idea of recycling everything, using only reusable goods, or any of that. I'm not saying I'm the amazing Lion. I am very very far from what the Human Animal could/should be. But, when I see the enormous amount of obese smoke stacks, shuffling and wheezing down a congested city street, I cannot help but become nostalgic for a time I have never known.
Thats my rant for today kids.
STOP SMOKING.
