Alright, so for all of you that read ProllyisnotProbably, you've seen this photo- the new Havoc frame by RYD. This photo has inspired me to discuss a topic that is of very little actual worth, but an important debate to myself and many of fixed riders I know. The track bike "movement" (because fad is a rude word...) that is sweeping across the country (Now in a Hip city near you!) is starting to evolve too far. The concept of riding a track bike, or even a conversion fixed gear to do tricks is fun. Its a challenge to do the "exclusive" tricks that can only be done on a track bike due to the direct drive (Keo Spin's and the like). There was also the factor of being able to ride the bike long distance with a gearing of, oh I dont know, say 48x17. And then there was the "flatland" element that made the moves of Byrd Phillips seem like watching Rodney Mullen for the first time, I mean it was crazy, the balance and technical skill he was showcasing in the early YouTube edits, crazy. But now its become Big Bike BMX, or 700CMX, which was interesting to see the Keo Spin replaced by the Pedal Grind, but has turned into nothing more than BMX on fixed gear bikes, that resemble the builds of a mountain bike more than the tapers and curves of anything built for the Velodrome. Case in point- this frame (which, I should add, I find to be TOTALLY RAD) is built for 26's. MOUNTAIN BIKE RIMS on fixed hubs. And the Giant straight fork, for the new move everyone is picking up- Stair Leaping. Im not saying the new school FixedFreestyle isn't fun to watch, but when I see a bike like this, with NO track components except the horizontal dropouts, I get nostalgic for the old shitty conversions that I used to see hoppin around on a rail thin back tire. But hey, I guess its all about evolution right? So maybe I'll throw a BMX crank set on my bike, some wheels off a DirtJump Bike, some riser bars, and a bombproof fork, toss the whole get up in the back of a truck and drive over to the spot to shred until its dark, then load it all up and drive home.
Yeah. Thats the ticket...
