New New!
Go Here
Heriot Street off of Rutledge Ave.
A new install on a closed road in downtown Charleston.
I checked it out this morning and took some pictures with a buddy and his camera.
From what I could tell, its a basic framework of a rectangular prism, covered in canvas, and then covered again in trash bags. (Talk about vinyl siding...)
The "back" of the piece has a cut down the center, allowing viewers to get inside of the seemingly out-of-place box that resides on a closed to traffic bridge to nowhere. Inside is a small stool and a screen. Upon further inspection one realizes that the screen is a projection of what is in front of the box, as it is in theory, a pinhole camera that the viewer is inside of.
I would recommend going at night, as the back flaps blow around in the breeze a bit, and let a touch of light in. Also, I'm sure the row of street-lamps its pointed at will be lit, and make for a great visual on the screen.
Notice: this box is SMALL, you will feel a bit cramped. But, try and relax and enjoy the view, or lack there of.
I hope this piece, with no known maker or gallery involvement, inspires Charleston artist to turn out more installations outside of the ridiculous "everyone-knows-everyone-gallery-opening" art scene that has rooted in our seemingly creative community.
